Hinges are an important yet often overlooked aspect of door hardware. They affect the door’s functionality and can also be used to add a decorative element with small details. The main parts of a hinge are the leaves, finials, knuckle, and hinge pin inside the knuckles.
Consider the type, weight, and size of the door when selecting hinges. Heavier doors will need more robust hinges, and exterior doors will need parts that won’t be susceptible to weather elements. Interior residential doors are common and can use a larger variety of hinges.
For doors up to five feet tall, use two hinges. Add an additional hinge for every 2 to 2.5 feet. So, a door 7.5 feet tall or more should have three hinges.
As far as placement of the hinges, the top of the top hinge should sit 5″ below the top of the door. The bottom of the bottom hinge should sit 10″ above the floor. The applicable third hinge should then be centered between the top and bottom hinges.
When replacing existing hinges, pay attention to the size of the hinge, the corners, and the existing screw pattern. Our 3.5″ hinges have a three-hole arc screw pattern. The 4″ ones have a four-hole staggered screw pattern. The 4.5″ ones have a four-hole template screw pattern and are only available with square corners and heavy-duty weight.
Finials are the decorative tips on the top and bottom of the hinges. They are a great detail to enhance your home and add character. We offer four different finial options, including ball, steeple, button, or acorn.
