We were delighted to work with Michele Savage from Our Uncluttered House on replacing some door hardware throughout her beautiful home. As one can see while browsing the photos in this story, the Vintage Brass hardware really pops on black and pink doors. Read on to learn more about Michele's latest project.
Please give us some more details on Our Uncluttered House. How did you develop it, and what sets it apart?
Our Uncluttered House was born in 2018 when we bought a fixer-upper, and my friends encouraged me to share our budget-friendly DIYs.
Did you do a remodel on your entire home? If so, were there specific rooms that were more challenging than others? Why?
Our current home was purchased brand new in 2019 and was builder blah, so we immediately started making it our own. In the fall of 2020, we finished our basement, and that was, by far, our most challenging project yet! We had never tackled a space this large. The plumbing was the hardest, so we hired someone to help because we couldn't see our way through it. What a relief that was.
How did you choose the hardware featured in this project? What attracted you to Grandeur Hardware?
I have always been a huge fan of long plates on door hardware. I first saw your Fifth Avenue Collection in another DIYer's home on Instagram; it was love at first sight!
How long did this project take to complete?
We could have installed all of our new hardware in a month, but we did it between projects, and it was worth the wait!
Will you use this hardware again in other projects/areas of your home? If so, why?
I would absolutely use this hardware again! In fact, I would love to upgrade the hardware in our basement to something similar in matte black. It adds so much warmth to our home, another layer of beauty.
Did you learn any tips and tricks about door hardware that would benefit others?
One of our favorite tips when we install hardware, is to watch YouTube videos of others installing. Having a visual aid like that makes the job so much easier!
What is your design style, and how do you incorporate those decorating decisions within your home?
II always get asked about my design style, but we simply do what we love in our home to make it warm, cozy, and welcoming. If I had to give it a name, I would say it's a "Modern Rustic Mix."
Where do you find design inspiration?
For inspiration, I love scrolling through Instagram and watching HGTV. My favorite pastime is looking at real estate listings!
When starting a project, how do you organize and plan for it?
When starting a project, I usually begin with a mood board and sometimes a rough sketch, depending on the project's size.
How did/do you choose a house to buy and renovate? ?
When we bought our current home, we were looking for our forever home. We wanted an open-concept bungalow with a small property since we spend most of our summer at our little place at the lake. We also wanted something new, a blank slate, to make our own.
Many people want to take on large remodeling projects. What are some recommendations for readers who wish to do an extensive remodel project?
To anyone wanting to tackle a large reno project, we recommend planning early - especially your budget! We also recommend shopping early for some items. For example, when we were finishing our basement, we ordered and paid for our framing wood, subfloor, and drywall months before we started. Knowing that part of our reno was paid for long before we began was a load off. We used that system as much as we could throughout the entire process.
What are some tips for readers who wish to make a transformation in their home?
For anyone wanting to transform their homes, the power of paint is a fantastic starting point. Changing your door hardware or lighting can also have a big impact.
Are you working on any other properties or projects besides your own home?
I am always working on something! I currently have two design projects for clients - an ensuite bathroom and a living room. I am also working on a big beautiful home that is a blank slate and is being turned into a Luxury AirBnB. It's been both challenging and rewarding!
What is next?
The Spring One Room Challenge is approaching, and we are tackling our walk-in pantry. It's currently filled with wire shelving and has so much potential!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The advice I love to share with others is this: Do what you love in your home and don't worry about what's trendy. It's your home, so make it your happy place.
